Winners and Losers & the Multicultural Ideal

I read this article yesterday about the racism that Asians face when applying to top-level colleges. The overlapping charts of historical patterns of anti-Jewish admissions policies and modern anti-Asian admissions practices are totally damning.

It’s a serious indictment. I would have considered myself pro-affirmative action a few years ago, but what’s happening with Asians is impossible to justify. I won’t pretend to have a better solution, but something has gotta give. Multiculturalism is a compelling ideal, but its implementation is always going to have winners and losers, as admissions into a limited credentialed environment is a zero-sum game.

My gut says that either someone will come up with a fairer system soon, or federal law will go the way of proposition 209.
