Zen Koans, Virality, and Self Promotion

Read this article yesterday about the viral site Upworthy. If you’re not familiar, they’re famous for creating click-bait with titles like, “The Things This 4-Year-Old Is Doing Are Cute. The Reason He’s Doing Them Is Heartbreaking.”

The methods they use to draw attention to their work feel shallow, cheap, and banal. But they are very successful.

The founders of Upworthy take the position that there’s no point of creating content if you don’t take whatever steps are necessary to make sure it gets seen.

If a blog is posted on the Internet, and no one is there to read it, does it make a clicking sound?
